The Newcastle Flyer (back to top)

Sunday 15 April 2012, 8:00am first tee time

Location:  Newcastle

Tournament Organiser: Alan Waddington

Another great day.  Three groups of four playing off club handicaps and a three way tie for first, each losing a stroke as did the front/back nine winners!!
Group score decided by taking best score on 1st hole, best two scores on 2nd hole, best 3 on 3rd hole, best four scores on 4th hole and then back to best score on 5th hole etc up to 16th hole, then best four scores on each of 17th and 18th holes - complex but it works!
Thanks Alan!

The Obelisk (back to top)

6 November 2011

2011 titleholder: Rick Chadiwck

The Event: The Obelisk (as it has now become called even though the original Obelisk was presented at the St Michaels event).
The 3 club event was played with 10 participants and only one winner. A beautiful warm morning with some obscene scores considering the low number of clubs allowed!

Saint Mary McKillop Miracle Open   (back to top)
(Note name change since canonisation in October 2010_

Thursday 26 January 2012

Tournament Director:  Peter Thornton

2012 Report from the TD:

The AD StMMMO was played on Australia Day 26th of January 2012 at Northbridge at the usual time of 0600 according to the rules published earlier in the week by the TD. Although apologies were received from Becker, Butler, Lowndes and Webb it was expected that, in their usual dedicated manner for a major, a strong field would turn up. 2 balls in per player were required.

The results:

Attendees: Peter Thornton and Nick Hillyard
Group 1: Peter Thornton and Nick Hillyard

Prize Ball Pool: 4

Scores: Nick Hillyard 43/17 and Peter Thornton 45/19
Nearest the Pin in Two on the 11th: Nick Hillyard - One ball
;
Longest Drive on 14th: Nick Hillyard (close enough to cut fairway as ruled by the TD) One ball

No specific miracles were recorded – the whole event being one;
Winner of the AD St MMMO Cup (the previous winner was not there to present it): Peter Thornton - Two balls and loss of one shot (which on appeal to the TD was immediately reinstated due to the lack of prize balls (until overridden by extraordinary general meeting of SMERGS upholding RULES!))

Coffee: Nick Hillyard (and many thanks for that!)
.

The round was played in record time in completely dry conditions albeit a little damp underfoot.

Declared the winner
, Peter Thornton, “it is entirely appropriate as the only Australian who played that I should have won this famous major SMERGS event this morning".

Winner  Peter Thornton - 19 pts each
NTP 11th (2nd shot)  Nick Hillyard
 Longest drive 14th  Nick Hillyard
 Miracles  The whole bloody thing
 Coffee  Nick Hillyard

THE DAWN PATROL  (back to top)

ANZAC DAY TROPHY

Wednesday,  25th April 2012 (20th Year!!)

TD Alan Waddington

Played each year at Royal Northbridge Golf Club on ANZAC Day

The longest running SMERGS major.  Played over the back nine until 2007.  In 2008 and 2009 played over 18 holes.
In 2010 rain prevented play on 25th April and the event was played over the back nine the following day, a public holiday.

In 2011 rain again prevented play on Anzac Day and just four intrepid SMERGS turned up on the following day (a public holiday due to Easter Monday) to play in intermittent rain.

In 2012, after the reading of the Ode by TD Alan, played over the first ten holes which proved popular as 12 intrepid SMERGS did battle with the unfamiliar holes.  Rick Butler won for the second year in a row for which he will lose a shot from his new SMERGS handicap. Click here for detailed scores.  Bets team was Butler, Chadwick, Figgis and Rowe with the other eight all paying for coffee.
