A word from the Tournament Organiser:

The Dawn Patrol.

ANZAC Day,  2001.

Seventeen SMERGs gathered on the tenth tee at dawn this morning. The usual staccato strains of the Kookaburras were missing, but on this occasion were suitably replaced as burglar Slimon Rowe ushered in the dawn with The Last Post.

Appropriately we were joined this year by Steve A who for the first time put the NZ in ANZAC, and we were delighted to welcome Tim who usually attends the real thing in the city with his Vietnam veteran mates. Thanks to both of you for joining us.

It was a beautiful morning to celebrate the eighty-sixth ANZAC Day and the eighth SMERG Dawn Patrol.

The standard of golf was very high overall, with a best score of 37 off the stick and three players within one point vying for The Dawn Patrol Trophy.

AWOL            Peter MacDougall who, in his absence,  was sentenced by the tribunal to be SMERG music master for the term of his natural life.

Thanks everyone for a wonderful morning,

Alan.

Notice of the premier event on the SMERGS calendar:

FOURTH ANNUAL CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

(hereinafter referred to as ‘The Championship’) for the

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY REPUBLICAN TROPHY (the ‘BEIGE JACKET’)

ROYAL NORTHBRIDGE G.C. – Sunday 26th August 2001 (a bit late this year!)

Order of Play

·                                 The Club Championship shall be played over 18 holes. The first tee will be available from 6.30 am. All competitors should be on the first tee for the ‘Call to Order’ by 6.20 am.

·                                 Groups shall be determined using the traditional SMERGS method.

·                                 Players shall be required to contribute 3 new individually-boxed golf balls each (balls to match the boxes, please; Rockets acceptable) by way of entry fee.

·                                 Because members have experienced some embarrassment (even felt really stupid) in the singing of the SMERGS song (especially near a main thoroughfare), this will NOT be part of the proceedings. Instead, each member shall recite (sotto voce if preferred) "I still call Northbridge home" as he tees his ball on the first tee.

·                                 Play shall be from the blue tees.

·                                 The designated marker for each group shall be required to keep the stroke and stableford score for each player in his group, as well as to calculate the team’s stableford average.

Events:

1.                               Club Champion        Winner: Net stroke score for 18 holes (Champion’s Beige Jacket plus 12 balls* plus trophy); Runner-up: 6 balls

2.                               Front 9                    Stableford score (excluding winners of events 1 and 3) (6 balls)

3.                               Back 9                      Stableford score (excluding winners of events 1 and 2) (6 balls)

4.                               NTP                          Hole # 5, 15, 16, 17 (3 balls each)

5.                               NTP in 2                   Hole # 2 (3 balls)

6.                               Longest drive          Hole # 18 (3 balls)

7.                               Teams                      Coffee bill to be calculated using traditional SMERGS method

Notes:

1.                               SMERGS handicaps current on the day of competition shall apply.

2.                               In the event of ties, all prizes shall be shared with the exception of the Club Championship. In the event of a tie in that event, the winner shall be determined by a countback based on the relative aggregates of groups of 3 holes.

3.                               *Ball prizes have been calculated based on 16 SMERGS participating. In the interests of equity, justice and fair play (for which the SMERGS are famous), the Seconded Acting Honorary Tournament Director - Temporary reserves the right to adjust prizes on the day.

Good luck to all!
