The Cypress Lakes Classic    (back to Tournament Directory or Hunter Tour)

2009 SMERGS on Tour - Event 4 (Flagship event of Hunter Tour)
Sunday  - 17 April. 8:56am first tee time

Under beautiful clear skies the Cypress Classic this year featured a field of 15 able golfers with one of the event's historic stayers, Alan Waddington, being withdrawn on Vets orders having damaged his fetlock while resting for the big day. He won't have to be put down but it does go to prove that red wine is better for your bodily functions than rest!! ( anyway, we all hope the healing process will be swift, Alan ).

On the Sunday morning we were greeted with the heart-warming news that the 12th hole, normally index 1 and a really tough par 4, had been changed permanently to a par 3. This news was embraced by the assembled cast with an audible sigh of relief.

In true Smergs fashion the TD had challenged conventional wisdom and tweaked the handicaps of the 4 groups and the place of AW was taken by the Phantom who scored 2 points on every hole. (Alan, you will be pleased to know that you didn't lose a shot as The Phantom was beaten by one on each 9----but you were lucky!!!).

The course was in fabulous condition, so much so that several remarked that it was the best prepared we've ever had and certainly the scores reflected the quality of the fairways and greens.

On a day when golf was clearly the winner, mere mortals amongst us may be amused to know that "Steroids" O'Donovan was pin high on the Monster par 5 16th with his second shot and dutifully recorded a birdie.

Thanks to everyone for participating.
Cheers, Nick
